How to Create Windows 11 Installation Media

If you need to perform a clean install or reinstall Windows 11 on a new or existing PC, you can create a bootable USB or DVD using the Windows 11 Media Creation Tool. Note that this tool only creates installation media for x64 processors and does not support Arm-based PCs.

:white_check_mark: Before You Begin

To get started, ensure you have:

  • A valid Windows 11 license or a qualifying Windows 10 device.
  • Internet connection (fees may apply).
  • Sufficient storage on your PC, USB drive, or external drive to save the .ISO file.
  • A blank DVD with at least 8 GB of space and a DVD burner (if creating a bootable DVD).
    • If the ISO file is too large for a DVD, use a Dual Layer DVD.
  • A 64-bit CPU (Windows 11 only supports 64-bit processors).
    • To verify, go to Settings > System > About or search for System Information and check under System Type.
  • Your PC must meet the Windows 11 system requirements.
  • Choose the same language as your current Windows version.

:warning: Warning: Installing Windows 11 on unsupported PCs may cause compatibility issues and prevent future updates. Proceed with caution.

:white_check_mark: Using the Media Creation Tool

  1. Download and Run the Media Creation Tool
  • Visit Microsoft’s official page and download the Windows 11 Media Creation Tool.
  • Right-click and Run as Administrator.
  • Accept the license terms.
  1. Configure Installation Media
  • Select Create installation media for another PC and click Next.
  • Choose your preferred language, edition, and architecture (64-bit).
  • Select the type of media:
    • USB Flash Drive: Connect a blank USB drive with at least 8 GB of space.
    • ISO File: Save the ISO to your PC, then burn it to a DVD later using a DVD burner.
  1. Create Installation Media
  • If using a USB Flash Drive, data on the drive will be deleted.
  • If using an ISO File, follow on-screen instructions to burn it to a DVD.

:white_check_mark: Installing Windows 11 Using the Media

Before you start:

  • Save your work and back up your PC.
  • Ensure all necessary drivers are installed. Check for updates:
    • Go to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
    • Visit your PC manufacturer’s website for additional drivers.

Step 1: Boot from Installation Media

  1. Insert the USB Flash Drive or DVD into the target PC.
  2. Restart your PC and enter the boot menu:
  • Press a key (e.g., F2, F12, Delete, or Esc) immediately after turning on your PC.
  • If needed, change the boot order in BIOS/UEFI to prioritize USB/DVD.
  1. If the device does not boot from the USB/DVD, temporarily disable Secure Boot in BIOS settings.

Step 2: Start Windows 11 Installation

  1. On the Install Windows screen, choose your language, time, and keyboard preferences, then click Next.
  2. Click Install Now.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Important Note: If the installation screen reappears after setup, access BIOS/UEFI and restore the original boot order to prioritize your internal drive.
